The mission, which once had the largest Indian population in California, was relocated due to floods and earthquakes, and the state of California moved the last few hundred residents in the mid-1990s and sold the campus to Sun Microsystems, which promised to preserve the site and buildings and make them accessible to the public. The Spanish began colonizing California with 21 missions and the Mission Santa Clara de Asis was founded in 1777. The red and white Santa Clara Broncos carry the city's flag, as does the mission that lies in the heart of the campus. On the grounds around the town hall stands a flagpole with all the flags that have flown over Santa Jose since it opened in 1853. Walk past and there is a large statue of John F. Kennedy, the first US president, on a hill just outside the entrance to the mission, which is near the Heart of Campus.

The 49ers were founded by red-and-white Tony Morabito, a Santa Clara University graduate who chose the red-and-white for his alma mater.
