Hospital stays in Santa Clara County are at their highest level in more than a decade, and three of the hospital's morgues are overcrowded, while four others are nearing capacity, Santa Cruz County health officials said Tuesday. California hospitals are warning against post-holiday surgery by California Healthline, California Public Radio and Kaiser Permanente California.
Santa Clara County, which has the second highest death rate in the state after San Francisco, had 36 deaths per 100,000 residents. Although San Diego County has its two thousand, it recorded more deaths in both 2014 and 2015 than any other county in California with more than 1,500 residents. Santa Cruz County and San Mateo County had the highest death rates in recent years, while Santa Jose County had the highest death rate in 2016, compared with 4,200 the previous year. But by taking more aggressive action, not waiting for regional intensive care capacity to fall by 15%, as the state's order required Thursday, the Santa Francisco County joined San Jose, San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties that have seen hospital overcrowding and hospital closures, but not Sacramento County.
The State of California has issued a Limited Residence Permit for the home to stop all non-essential work activities in all Purple Tier Counties, including Santa Clara County. Persons living in the county were ordered to live in temporary shelters until March 16, 2020, with the exception of emergency doctors and medical personnel. In response to the state's emergency ordinances, in addition to a ban on nail salons and indoor dining, Santa Cruz County, San Mateo County and San Bernardino County do not allow nail salons or restaurants in their communities.
Residents in the residential areas are also protected from eviction by Santa Clara County ordinances and an executive order issued by Governor Newsom.
